I graduated from Harvard Law School in 1970 and spent 23 years practicing commercial civil litigation. 13 years ago, a friend called me to say his grandmother had died from dehydration in a nursing home. I investigated and was sickened by what I discovered. Dehydration, malnutrition, and preventable infections are the leading causes of death in California's nursing homes. Alexis de Tocqueville once wrote that the true measure of a society is how it treats its children and its elders. I have devoted my practice to stopping elder abuse by holding nursing homes and other caregivers accountable for their neglect.
